Newsletter 10 – 24th June 2021
We welcome our newest member to Sunshine SDS.
Hello everyone, my name is Alyshia and I am the new assistant in the Allied Health team. I have spent the last 12 months working as an Integration Aide at Ardeer primary school supporting students and their needs 1:1. However, some of you may remember me, as I worked as an ES in the primary team at Sunshine SDS for 5 years prior to that. I am currently studying my Bachelor of Education with the aspiration to become a Special Education teacher when I finish. I am passionate about Literacy, Communication/AAC and Play-Based Learning. In my spare time I run an All-Inclusive dance studio where I teach all styles of dance for both students with additional needs and mainstream students. I am very excited to be in this role and I look forward to working alongside you all in the Sunshine SDS community.
Shared Reading. Coming up to the holidays it is important to continue to build and grow our student’s literacy skills. One way to do this is to read stories with your children. Shared reading is an interactive reading experience that occurs when children join in or share the reading of a book with an adult. It is all about having fun!
Read with lots of expression, use different voices, point out funny parts of the story or pictures and follow the lead of what the child is interested in. It is really important to use your child’s communication system available to them so that they can use it or so that you can model language for them. Some examples of this might be “Wow! Look at that!” “That cow looks funny!”.
Use texts that you think your child will be interested in. If you’re having fun hopefully they will too! Try to point to the words as you read them and encourage your child with any attempts at turning the page, pointing at words or reaching for their communication system to tell you something!
Reading will help to build your child’s knowledge that text has meaning, expose them to new and different language and will help to build communication skills.
School Chaplain – Natasha (Tash) Godfrey
Tash Godfrey has recently begun working at Sunshine SDS as school chaplain. She will be running family support activities.
If you didn’t get a chance to fill in her survey at the SSG evening at school, please take 2 minutes now to fill it in online (link below) and let her know the kinds of activities you and your family would benefit from.
