Message from our Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Well, it’s hard to believe we are nearing the end of Term 1, 2021 and despite the short 3 day absence due to the circuit breaker lockdown, we have remained together for the term which has been incredibly exciting! Being together has meant we have been able to establish priority learning goals for students discussed and finalised through the Student Support Group process, ensure all classrooms are well resourced and set up to support all students and provide opportunities for our community to come together and celebrate learning!
We hope that you have all received your magnet which provides most important dates for the school year and that this is up on your fridge. I will continue to note important dates in my newsletter.
Thursday 1st April – Last Day of Term 1 – Early Dismissal 1pm (Please endure you make the necessary arrangements to be home early for the bus or pick your child up from school at 1pm)
Friday 2nd April – Sunday 18th April – School Holidays
Monday 19th April – Students return to school
Friday 11th June – Report writing Day (No school)

It has been wonderful to welcome parents, guardians and families back into our school with a variety of events taking place across term 1, COVID style;
On Wednesday 3rd of March, we hosted our first Community Event for 2021 which was also the first opportunity to welcome families into the school for around 12 months. With the introduction of our Xuno booking system and teacher follow up and the option of phone, WebEx or Face to face meetings, we saw an increase in attendance which was very pleasing with 145 families completing their SSGs on the night, alternative arrangements have been made for the remaining families. The opportunity to work in partnership at these meetings in establishing and finalizing student’s priority learning goals is so important. You can look forward to receiving your child’s individual Lraning Plan next week.
Our Learning Marketplace was set up and included stalls from our Allied Health Team, Positive Climate for Learning Team, ICT Team and our students’ products were available for sale at our Enterprise stall.
A small number of families shared a meal with us and many families enjoyed a complimentary hot drink from the coffee van, it was a wonderful way to welcome back our community, we have missed you!
On Thursday 11th and Friday 12th of March we had our Primary and Secondary Sports Days. The weather was beautiful and on the warm side and this year we had a significant increase in attendance from families, dressed in team colours as well and actively engaging on with their children, what a wonderful sight to see. Clinics were run by Cricket Victoria, Hockey Victoria, Tennis Victoria and we were supported by student volunteers from Emmanuel College and Marian College.
Thank you to Robyn for her coordination of such meaningful and engaging events for both our Primary and Secondary students and to all staff for their support of students, without the input from staff, our families and of course our volunteers, our students would not benefit as greatly from these amazing experiences.
We have welcomed our Vietnamese and Burmese communities into our community hub for a welcome back morning tea and on Wednesday 31st March at 9:30am will be our whole community morning tea, we hope you can join us!
All staff participated in our Term 1 Curriculum Day on Tuesday 9th March. The focus was on the implementation of our Coaching Model (Tutor Initiative). First up all staff were provided with an overview of the model and expectations. A majority of the day was then spent in rotations lead by our Speech Pathologists and Learning Leaders, developing knowledge and capacity in small group literacy instruction.
We are excited to announce the Primary swimming dates will fall in Term 2 Week 2 (26-30 April) and the Secondary swimming dates will be in Term 3 Week 4 (August 2-6) this year. The parent consent forms will need to be returned as soon as possible for Primary swimming. The Secondary consent forms will come out closer to the date. Please note that the students that usually participate in the alternate Hydrotherapy program will have their dates confirmed soon.
Katie Hall (MP Footscray) Visit
On Thursday 11th March we had a visit from Katie Hall the Member of Parliament for Footscray. It has been some time since Katie visited and she was very eager to see our finished Horticulture area, see the school upgrades including the Sensory Garden and discuss the new project. It was timely that the Architects were onsite on this day and were able to discuss what stage of the process we are at. Katie was thrilled with the school, the projects we have been able to complete and the upcoming building works.
We have commenced regular meetings and consultation with Maddison Architects, Consultant Scott Alterator and the Victorian School’s Building Authority. I am engaged in fortnightly meetings and there have also been opportunities for a whole staff briefing/overview and workshop as well as a Vertical Team workshop (20 staff from a variety of roles across the school). The architects have also spent two days in the school undertaking observation of our teaching and learning framework and how spaces are used. On Friday I will be going to visit two newly built/refurbished Special Schools to gain insight and ideas.
The frequency of meetings is extensive during these early stages as we commence this exciting journey!
We will be using the holiday period to undertake the following school improvements to ensure we continue to provide safe, engaging and vibrant learning and working environments for students, staff and our community.
I wish you all a lovely Easter and holiday period and look forward to seeing all students back at school on Monday 19th April.
