Newsletter 9 – 9th September 2021
Dear Parents, Guardians and Families,
I would like to sincerely thank you for your support over yet another challenging term as we have moved in and out of face-to-face learning. Our community continues to show great strength and resilience in the face of change and uncertainty, and we have been so grateful for the support of you all in taking steps to promote and prioritise the health and safety of our community.
Our focus has been on providing high quality learning opportunities for students through both Seesaw and the hard copy learning packs. Providing this dual mode has been in response to feedback from families from last year and we continue to build on and provide this. During this lockdown we have also contacted Food Bank and are again able to provide Help Hampers for families. We want you to know that despite not seeing each other or being together, you are on our minds and in our hearts and we are trying to support you as much as we can.
We are hopeful that we receive news over the holidays that we will be together again for the commencement of Term 4. Over the holidays, Daniel Andrews is expected to announce a roadmap which will include the return to school. A reminder that we will be hearing these announcements at the same time as you, we then await DET guidance and as always, we will keep you informed as quickly as we can.
Due to the extension of the lockdown, our curriculum day scheduled for tomorrow Friday 10th September has been cancelled.
Book And Science Weeks
Due to the current lockdown and our learning and working from home our Science Week and Book Week Celebrations have not been able to go ahead. We look forward to rescheduling these on our return.
School Wide Camp Process
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, we anticipate that the camp scheduled for Week 3 of Term 4, will be cancelled. If this happens, we are working on some alternative alternate celebration(s) that can occur at school. The Learning Leaders are also meeting to develop our camping program camp for Years F-12 to create a scaffolded approach throughout our students’ journey at Sunshine SDS. This involves smaller celebrations, building to larger ones as students’ progress through Primary into Secondary.
We have tentatively booked in school photos for early Term 4, this will be dependent on COVID restrictions and DET guidance. We will notify you once we can confirm that these can go ahead.
As you may be aware, the Victorian Government has invested $10 million to upgrade and modernise Sunshine Special Developmental School. This is in addition to the $2.615 million investment in the 2016-17 State Budget and $157,800 in Round 4 of the Inclusive School Fund in 2018.
With this funding, we are building on the upgrades completed in 2019 with new permanent buildings and further modernisation of our school.
These current works will commence in Term 2, 2022 and are scheduled for completion in 2023.
We are currently working with the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) and Maddison Architects to develop concept plans to ensure that the project aligns with the specific requirements of our students and provides a healthy learning environment for them. This included developing preliminary floor plans, external 3D views and designing connections between the proposed new buildings and our existing school building.
These preliminary plans and designs have now been finalised, and the project is currently progressing into the next stage of Design Development (DD). The DD phase is forecast to be completed in the coming months. Once complete, we will be able to share exciting final designs with the school community!

We will continue to keep you informed with updates as the project progresses.
