Week 1 Newsletter – 29th April 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians and families,

Welcome to Term 2, it has been fantastic to see all our students’, staff and families smiling faces as we have returned to school ready to learn and transitioned back in so smoothly.  Our students are to be commended and continue to impress us as they have adapted to so many changes over the past two years, they have demonstrated such flexibility and resilience.

 COVID Updates

Rapid Antigen (RA) Testing

The Department of Education and Training (DET) is recommended that staff and students in specialist settings test 5 days a week for the first 4 weeks of Term 2, therefore we are continuing with voluntary precautionary RA Testing for the first 4 weeks of Term.

Please let the office know if you require any further RA Tests.

Thank you to all our families for their continued support, understanding, and management at the home of this important routine.

Face masks

From 11:59 pm Friday 22 April, face masks, while recommended, are not required in any school setting. This means students, staff and visitors in schools are no longer required to wear face masks. Any student or staff member who wishes to wear a mask may do so, including those who are medically at-risk.

Screening requirements

Students and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19, and have completed their 7-day isolation period, now do not need to undertake rapid antigen test (RAT) screening for 12 weeks after their release from isolation. This was previously 8 weeks.

Vaccination requirements for visitors to schools

Parents, carers, and other adult visitors (not performing work) are no longer required to show evidence of two doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Student Illness

The cooler weather is approaching and along with it comes illness, we have already seen staff and students unwell with cold and flu like symptoms requiring days off and COVID testing. If your child is showing any signs of being unwell and cold and flu like symptoms, we ask that they stay at home, and you seek medical advice.  This will ensure they return to school ready to engage in learning and their classmates and teachers also avoid getting sick.

Education Support Staff Day
The commitment, work and dedication of our extraordinary Education Support Staff is to be celebrated all day every day.

We do however have an official day of celebration each year, this year it is on Monday 16th May. As a school we celebrate these amazing, highly valued, very special people in our lives and the lives of our students!

If you would like to come in and make a gift for our ES Staff please you are very welcome to attend this parent event.

10.30 – 12.30

Make soaps for our Education Support staff!

We have a guest expert in soap making – Jane Churchland – who will guide us through making scented soaps for our education support staff so we can show our appreciation of all the hard work that they do supporting our kids.

Soap making is easy and fun, you might even pick up a new hobby!

 Professional Practice Days

The Department recently reached an in-principle agreement with unions, as bargaining representatives of employees in the Victorian Teaching Service. If approved, teachers will be entitled to 3 additional professional practice days in 2022. For Term 2 2022, the department recommends schools hold their first professional practice day on the same day for all staff, therefore this will be a pupil free day. We are currently consulting with staff to identify a suitable date which will be taken to our School Council meeting in May.  Once confirmed the date will be communicated to families.

 Holiday Building and Grounds Improvements

Thank you to John who has worked hard to not only finish jobs and keep the school looking fantastic for our return but also for his coordination of the many projects that were being completed by a variety of contractors. Some of the improvements you will notice when you are in the school next include.

Synthetic Turf

Synthetic turf has been installed to replace the grass areas around the new secondary portable block.

Concrete works

Concreting has been completed in the front carpark to replace cracked, broken and lifted concrete which was posing an OHS risk.

Building project – Portable removal

Whilst we are yet to have confirmation as to the commencement date of our capital building works, the old P1/P2 portables have been removed in readiness for this.  At this stage there has been little impact to the front carpark which is a good outcome.

Post School Options Information Night

We hosted our Transition Expo for families in the last week of Term 1. We welcomed many existing and new service providers to join us and provide an opportunity for families to learn more about the options available to them as a post school pathway. We had fantastic attendance from families of students in years 11 and 12 as well as some families whose children are in younger year levels, we also welcomed families and staff from Jennings Street School and Yarraville SDS.  Speaking to parents they were in awe of the night and the information they received.

I would like to thank Dee for her coordination of such an important event in our calendar as well as the extensive work she does and support she provides to families throughout the transition process. Thank you also to all teaching and leadership staff who attended on the evening.

I hope you all continue to take care and I look forward to seeing you in the school soon!
